The secrets of Ballarat's dark criminal past will be uncovered as part of the city's Heritage Festival 2022.

Federation University historian David Waldron is behind a series of guided tours of the old Ballarat Gaol, now the site of the SMB Campus.The gaol's colourful history includes the daring escape of a notorious bushranger. Artifacts, blueprints and images, and a virtual reality tour of tunnels and turrets, will be part of the tour.

The free tours will run hourly from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on May 28 and 29.
